De Aquí, y De Allá: Honoring Heritage, Honoring Ourselves

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the richness of being de aquí, y de allá—from here and from there. Many of us carry stories, recipes, music, and traditions that cross borders and generations. These roots remind us that identity isn’t divided; it’s whole and layered.

Celebration, though, doesn’t always have to mean doing more. Part of honoring our heritage is also honoring our bodies and spirits through rest. Both joy and stillness are vital. A few ways to hold space for both:

  • Cook with intention. A familiar dish can bring comfort and connection.

  • Reconnect with stories. Share memories with family, or reflect on your own in writing.

  • Move to rhythm. Dance, or simply let music carry you.

  • Choose rest as tradition. A nap, a walk, or a moment of prayer can be acts of cultural care.

As counselors, we know healing grows in both expression and pause. This month, may we honor the beauty of our culture while also creating space for rest—because to be de aquí, y de allá is to carry resilience, joy, and restoration.
