Counselor-in-Training, Practicum Student

SJ Thompson

I bring a unique blend of life experience, curiosity, and compassion to counseling. Before
beginning my journey as a therapist, I spent over a decade as a marketing executive in the tech industry, leading teams and guiding strategy. What I loved most about that work was mentoring others—helping people recognize their strengths, navigate challenges, and step into their potential. That passion led me to counseling, where I now support clients in exploring their identities, rewriting limiting narratives, and moving toward more empowered, authentic lives.

As a queer and nonbinary counselor-in-training, I’m deeply committed to holding space for
LGBTQ+ and gender-expansive people to feel affirmed, understood, and empowered. In a world that often sends harmful messages about who we’re allowed to be, I offer a therapeutic relationship grounded in curiosity, compassion, and respect. I draw from narrative, psychodynamic, and social constructivist approaches and view each client as the expert in their own life.

Education and Training

I am pursuing a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Northwestern University with a specialization in child and adolescent mental health. I practice under the supervision of Ana María Cabezas, LPC-S, RPT and Angela Erickson, MA, LIMHP, LPC. I also hold a Master of Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and bring years of experience in leadership and mentorship into my clinical identity. My work centers on helping clients explore identity, reclaim personal narratives, and move toward lives that reflect their values and truth.
